Lately, we’ve been leaning on a combination of Metaobjects and Metafields as our cheat code to give our clients some time back while enhancing their website. They’re one of the most effective ways to scale a high-performing product catalog, especially when they’re used to power the PDP experience. These native Shopify tools allow us to build flexible, modular content systems, such as FAQs or custom banners, that can be updated directly within the Shopify admin. Minimal developer dependency, no code to manage.
It’s a building-block approach: we establish the system once, and from there, clients have a clean, repeatable framework to manage and evolve content on their own. Paired with tools like Matrixify, it becomes even more scalable across large catalogs.
The applications are wide-ranging, but for the sake of clarity, here are four ways we typically put Metafields and Metaobjects to work:
Using Metafields to Create Custom Badges
We’ve built a dynamic badge system using Shopify’s Metaobject framework to surface key product signals, such as collection context, product attributes, and supporting iconography, directly on the PDP and across product cards on collection and homepage grids.
Because the system is powered by Metafields, badges can be assigned at the product level and styled with flexibility—adjusting text size, placement, and visual hierarchy without touching code. The result is a modular layer of storytelling that’s easy to maintain, consistent across the site, and adaptable as merchandising needs evolve.

Using Metafields to Power Product Details with Short Descriptions
From an SEO standpoint, the short description Metafield does more than it gets credit for. Positioned as a concise, on-page summary, it gives search engines a clear, structured signal of what each product page represents, improving crawlability and strengthening relevance for long-tail queries.
It also serves as a reliable foundation for meta descriptions: consistent, keyword-informed, and tailored at the product level rather than relying on templated copy. Pair that with geo-targeted collection structures, and you have a setup where the right products surface for the right audiences, in the right markets, without duplicating work across regions.

Using Metafields to Create Accordion Menus
Using Shopify's metaobject and metafield architecture, we’ve built dynamic accordion sections on the PDP that house product-level content (such as specifications, usage guidance, and material details in this example) directly from the admin. Each accordion is structured once and populated via Metafields, allowing content to be updated and published instantly.



Using Metafields to Upsell
Instead of relying on external apps to power “Complete the Look” functionality, we can create a native upselling system directly within the theme architecture, giving you full control over related product recommendations, styling pairings, and curated product bundles from the Shopify admin.
By assigning linked products through Metafields, clients can build tailored upsell experiences on the PDP without added app subscriptions, performance tradeoffs, or design limitations. These pairings can be customized product by product, allowing teams to merchandise intentionally rather than relying on automated recommendation engines that may not align with the brand’s visual direction or inventory priorities. Beyond reducing app dependency, native systems like these also help streamline site performance, improve maintainability, and create a more scalable merchandising workflow as the catalog grows.
